This Week in Fredericksburg - April 09, 2026
NEWSLETTER DRAFT:
Thursday, April 09, 2026
Spring has fully arrived and this week proves it — the calendar is stacked with reasons to be outside, from the river to the battlefield to the brewery patio. Saturday is the headliner day, with the Farmers Market back in full swing at Hurkamp Park, kids pulling trout out of Old Cossey Pond, blacksmiths firing up the forge at Ferry Farm, and the Stillhouse Junkies bringing their Colorado Americana sound to 6 Bears. If you only do one thing this weekend, make it a Saturday morning loop: market first, then a stroll with the rescue dogs, then decide whether you're a battlefield-walk person or a winery person by noon. This is the week where Fredericksburg reminds you why you live here.
This Week
For Families
Kids' Trout Fishing Day at Old Cossey Pond — Saturday, April 11, Morning · Old Cossey Pond at Memorial Park, Fredericksburg
Virginia DWR stocks this little pond specifically for days like this, and it's one of the best low-pressure introductions to fishing you'll find anywhere. The pond is small enough that kids can cast from almost anywhere on the bank and have a real shot at catching something — which, if you've ever taken a six-year-old fishing at a lake, you know is the whole ballgame. It's free, it's close to downtown, and you don't need a boat or fancy gear. Bring a lawn chair, a bucket, and some patience. Get there early — the fish are most active first thing, and the best bank spots fill up fast.
Family Day at the Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) — Sunday, April 12, 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM · Fredericksburg Area Museum, Fredericksburg
FAM's Family Days are genuinely well done — not the kind of museum event where they hand your kid a worksheet and call it programming. Expect hands-on history activities, scavenger hunts through the galleries, and craft stations that actually tie into the exhibits. Admission is $5–$10, which is a steal for a solid afternoon of entertainment that doesn't involve a screen. The museum is right on Princess Anne Street, so you can easily combine this with lunch downtown. Best for ages 4–12, though younger kids will find things to do too.
Open Historic Forge Day (Ferry Farm) — Saturday, April 11, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM · George Washington's Ferry Farm — Blacksmith Shop, Stafford County
If your kid has any interest in fire, metal, or making things with their hands, this is a no-brainer. The blacksmith shop at Ferry Farm runs live demonstrations all afternoon — the smiths are knowledgeable and genuinely enjoy fielding questions from curious kids (and adults, honestly). It's included with regular admission, and the rest of Ferry Farm is worth exploring while you're there. The grounds are beautiful this time of year, and there's enough space for kids to run around between demonstrations. Plan about two hours for the full visit.
Preschool Story Time — Thursday, April 09, 10:30 AM · Central Rappahannock Regional Library — Howell Branch, Stafford County
The Thursday morning story time at Howell is a staple for a reason — it's well-paced for the preschool attention span, mixes in songs and movement, and the librarians clearly love what they do. Free, no registration needed, and a great excuse to get out of the house on a weekday morning. Arrive a few minutes early to grab a good spot on the rug.
Date Night
Mainstage Performance: "Singin' in the Rain" — Saturday, April 11, 7:30 PM · Riverside Center for the Performing Arts, Stafford County
Riverside's dinner-theater productions are consistently better than you expect them to be, and "Singin' in the Rain" is a big, splashy show that plays to their strengths — elaborate choreography, a live orchestra, and yes, actual rain on stage. Tickets run $60–$80 and include a full dinner, which makes the math pretty reasonable for a complete night out. The food is solid (not an afterthought), and the venue is comfortable without feeling stuffy. Book ahead — Saturday nights sell out, especially for a title this well-known. This is the kind of evening where you leave feeling like you actually did something, not just ate dinner in a different zip code.
Saturday Afternoon Wine Tasting — Potomac Point Winery — Saturday, April 11, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM · Potomac Point Winery & Vineyard, Stafford County
Potomac Point is the closest thing the area has to a Tuscan afternoon — the vineyard views are legitimately beautiful, especially now that everything's green. The tasting flights rotate seasonally, and their Viognier is consistently excellent if you're not sure where to start. Saturday afternoons get busy by 2:00, so arriving closer to noon means you'll actually get a table on the patio without waiting. Bring a blanket if you want to spread out on the lawn. It's a 20-minute drive from downtown Fredericksburg, but it feels like a different world entirely.
Sunday Brunch & Live Music at Spencer Devon Brewing — Sunday, April 12, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM · Spencer Devon Brewing, Fredericksburg
If Saturday night doesn't work, Sunday brunch at Spencer Devon is a low-key alternative that still feels like an occasion. The acoustic live music keeps things relaxed, the beer is excellent (their lagers especially), and the food menu has expanded enough to feel like a real brunch, not just bar snacks. Downtown location means you can walk the river trail afterward. Get there by 11:30 if you want a seat without hovering.
For Singles & Young Professionals
Thursday Trivia Night at Strangeways Brewing — Thursday, April 09, 6:30 PM · Strangeways Brewing, Fredericksburg
This is one of the easiest solo walks in town. The crowd skews late 20s to early 40s, the beer list is adventurous (Strangeways does sours and wild ales better than anyone in the region), and the trivia format is casual enough that you can jump onto a team that needs an extra person without it being weird. Show up by 6:15 to grab a table and a drink before rounds start. The vibe is friendly-competitive, not cutthroat. If you just moved here and want to meet people who aren't your coworkers, this is your Thursday night.
Yoga at the Brewery (Adventure Brewing — North) — Sunday, April 12, 11:00 AM · Adventure Brewing Company — North, Stafford County
All-levels yoga inside the brewery, followed by a pint — it's the most Fredericksburg thing imaginable, and it works. The class is genuinely good (not just a marketing gimmick), the instructor adapts for beginners and experienced yogis alike, and the post-class beer is included in the $15 price. People come alone all the time; the shared experience of doing downward dog next to a fermentation tank is a natural conversation starter. Bring your own mat.
Run Club Weekly Meetup — Tuesday, April 14, 6:00 PM · Lucky Road Run Shop, Fredericksburg
Lucky Road's Tuesday run club is the best free social event in town that nobody thinks of as a social event. The group does 3–5 miles through downtown at all paces — nobody gets left behind, and the faster runners circle back. You'll end up chatting with people you'd never meet otherwise, and the post-run hangout often migrates to a nearby brewery. No sign-up, no membership, just show up in running shoes. The regulars are welcoming and the route changes enough to stay interesting.
LGBTQ Board Game Night at Pride Center FXBG — Wednesday, April 15, 6:00 PM · Pride Center FXBG (FAHASS), Fredericksburg
A genuinely welcoming monthly meetup where the games range from casual (Codenames, Ticket to Ride) to more involved strategy games depending on who shows up. Open to the LGBTQ+ community and allies, and the low-key format makes it easy to walk in alone. The Pride Center space is comfortable and the regulars go out of their way to include newcomers. Free, no RSVP needed.
Groups & Friends
Fredericksburg Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park — Saturday, April 11, 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM · Hurkamp Park, Fredericksburg
The Saturday market is the best group outing that doesn't require a plan — just pick a time, pick a corner to meet, and wander. The vendor mix is strong this time of year: early spring greens, baked goods, local meats, and enough craft vendors to keep non-foodies interested. Pro tip for groups: go before 9:00 AM if you want the full selection and room to move; by 10:30 it's packed and the best produce is picked over. Street parking on William and Princess Anne fills up fast, so use the parking garage on Sophia Street and walk over. Grab coffee at one of the downtown shops on the way in.
Stillhouse Junkies Live at 6 Bears & A Goat Brewing — Saturday, April 11, 7:30 PM · 6 Bears & A Goat Brewing Company, Stafford County
The Stillhouse Junkies are a Colorado-based Americana trio that plays with more energy than most five-piece bands — fiddle, guitar, upright bass, and vocal harmonies that hit. 6 Bears is one of the best live-music venues in the area for a group because the space is big enough that you're not crammed in, the beer selection is deep, and there's food on-site so you don't have to eat beforehand. Grab a long table early if you're rolling with more than four people. This is a proper Saturday night out.
Ruck Hunger 2026 Charity Ruck March — Saturday, April 11, Various times · Honor Bound FIT / 5.11 Tactical, Fredericksburg
This is a team-based ruck march where you carry donated food in your pack to benefit the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank — part endurance challenge, part community service, all camaraderie. It's the kind of event that's way more fun with a group than solo, and the shared suffering of hauling canned goods in a rucksack bonds people fast. Free to participate (donations encouraged, obviously). Coordinate with your crew on what to bring and pack accordingly.
Fredericksburg Spring Gun & Knife Show — Saturday, April 11 – Sunday, April 12, Various times · Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center, Spotsylvania County
Two days of vendors, collectors, and enthusiasts at the Expo Center. If your friend group includes anyone who collects knives, shoots recreationally, or just likes browsing gear, this is a solid outing. The show draws regional dealers so the selection is better than what you'll find at a single shop. Go early Saturday for the best inventory — Sunday afternoon is when dealers start packing up and you can negotiate.
All Ages & Pets
Guided Battlefield Walk: Sunken Road — Saturday, April 11, 2:00 PM · Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, Fredericksburg
The ranger-led Sunken Road walk is one of the best free things you can do in Fredericksburg, full stop. The NPS rangers are excellent storytellers, and standing in the actual road where the battle happened hits differently than reading about it. The walk is about an hour, mostly flat, and genuinely engaging for anyone old enough to pay attention (say 8+). Dogs on leash are welcome on the battlefield grounds. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water — April sun on an open field is warmer than you think.
Introduction to Kayaking on the Rappahannock — Sunday, April 12, 1:00 PM · City Dock, Fredericksburg
Parks & Rec runs this beginner paddle class a few times each spring, and it fills up. For $45 you get instruction, gear, and time on the river — no experience needed. The Rappahannock from City Dock is calm enough for true beginners but scenic enough to feel like an adventure. All ages welcome, though you'll want to be a confident swimmer. This is the kind of thing you'll be glad you did once you're out on the water.

Standing Pick
A. Smith Bowman Distillery — 1 Bowman Drive, Fredericksburg
If you've lived here for years and still haven't done the Bowman tour, this is your week. The distillery is one of the oldest in Virginia, and the tour is short enough (about 45 minutes) that it doesn't eat your whole afternoon, but detailed enough that you actually learn something. The tasting at the end is the real draw — their Bowman Brothers Small Batch bourbon is excellent, and the limited-edition releases (when available) are worth asking about at the counter. The gift shop prices are better than what you'll find at ABC stores for the same bottles. Saturday afternoons are the busiest; go on a weekday if you can, or aim for the first tour of the day on the weekend. Free parking right at the door. It's tucked behind the Expo Center off Route 3, so first-timers sometimes drive right past it — watch for the small sign. One of the best free tours in the region, and you'll leave with a bottle.
Before You Go
- Weekend Weather — Expect highs in the mid-60s Saturday with partly cloudy skies and a chance of afternoon showers Sunday — layer up for morning events and bring a light rain jacket if you're doing anything outdoors on Sunday.
- Parking Tip — Saturday morning downtown will be busy with the Farmers Market crowd; use the Sophia Street parking garage and walk over to Hurkamp Park rather than circling for street spots on Caroline.
- Local Resource — The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank is actively collecting donations through the Ruck Hunger event and beyond; if you can't ruck, you can still drop off non-perishables at their facility on Jefferson Davis Highway any weekday.
