This is the show of the week, full stop. Umphrey's McGee brings their prog-jam-rock road show to Roanoke's newer downtown music hall, and if you've never seen them, know that a two-set night from these guys can go anywhere — metal riffs, funk breakdowns, quiet acoustic detours. The Exchange is intimate enough that you'll feel the low end in your chest. Get there before doors if you want to be anywhere near the rail; downtown parking is easiest in the Center in the Square deck two blocks over.

The best free hangout in town this Friday. Franklin Road closes down, The Delaneys play the outdoor stage, and the whole downtown crowd spills out into the street with food trucks and charity booths. It's the pre-game before whatever else you're doing — grab a beer, run into six people you know, then peel off to your real plans. Bring cash for the vendors and wear something you don't mind sweating through.

The touring dinosaur show is back — life-size animatronic T-rex, baby dinos you can pet, fossil digs, and a LEGO play zone that will occupy small humans for a solid hour. Go Friday morning if you can; Saturday afternoons are wall-to-wall strollers. Buy tickets online in advance — the walk-up line at Berglund is not the move. Budget an extra $10-15 per kid for the ride-on dinosaurs, because they will ask.

Minor-league baseball at Salem Memorial is still one of the best-value nights in the valley. Faith and Family Night means fireworks after the last out, and the RidgeYaks have been fun to watch this summer. Sit on the third-base side for shade in the early innings. Concessions are fine; the real move is a Homer's Hot Dog and a lemonade.

A ranger-led sunset walk up on Mill Mountain to watch the meadows light up with fireflies. It's genuinely magical if you've never done it — bring bug spray, closed-toe shoes, and maybe a light layer because it cools off there fast. Free, family-friendly, and the kind of thing you'll remember longer than another dinner out.

Salem's answer to First Fridays — live music, food vendors, family-friendly, and free. Travis Reigh does an approachable country/rock set that plays well to a mixed crowd. Park on Main Street a few blocks off the venue and walk in.

Costume up (or don't — nobody actually cares) for a swashbuckling bar party with SupaFly 5 doing their party-rock thing. This is a "how weird do you want tonight to get" kind of night. Go with a group, wear the eyepatch, tip well.

Rumours LA is the tribute act that actually sounds like the record — Stevie's shawl-twirl and all. Dr Pepper Park's summer flashback series always draws a lawn-chair-and-cooler crowd, so bring blankets and get there by 5:30 to stake a good spot near the stage-right sightline (the sound is better on that side). Tickets are worth it; expect them to check bags at the gate.

Free outdoor jazz at Longwood, food and drink for sale on-site. Bring low-back chairs, not the tall ones — your neighbors will thank you. This is the low-key weekend anchor if you don't want to drive downtown or pay a cover.

Webb Wilder has been playing swampy Southern roots-rock for four decades and he's a storyteller between songs in the best possible way. The Spot on Kirk is tiny — maybe 100 seats — which means every one of them is a good one. $15-$20 at the door, cash-friendly, and the beer list is small but honest.

Grammy-nominated bluegrass at $25 — this is a bargain. Frank Solivan's mandolin work will make even the bluegrass-skeptical convert. Get dinner beforehand; the Country Store scene is about the music, not the food.

You go in with a plain glass lamp base and leave with a genuinely gorgeous stained-glass mosaic Turkish lantern. Great date-afternoon option — you're seated, chatting, working with your hands for a couple of hours. The Hotel Roanoke's ballroom setting is a nice touch. Register ahead; supplies are counted.

Nashville duo Haunted Like Human do harmony-heavy Americana that hits harder in a small brewery room than it would in a big venue. Olde Salem's back room is the right size, the beer's dialed in, and the crowd actually listens. Show up hungry — the kitchen holds its own.

Peak-summer tomato day is the market at its best. Heirlooms, cherokee purples, sungolds, plus tasting-friendly programming and the usual bakers, cheesemakers, and jam folks. Go early — the good tomatoes are gone by 10 AM.

Free community concert with SupaFly Five and charity partners. Family-friendly, bring chairs.

Regional herbalism gathering with multiple classes — plant ID, wildcrafting, medicinal prep. It's a drive but worth it if it's your thing.

A local-history talk on how Roanoke went from a whistle-stop called Big Lick to the rail hub of western Virginia. Excellent if you care about how this place got here.

Sunday-afternoon music inside the Taubman's beautiful atrium space — free, all ages, and a perfect low-lift way to close the weekend. Amanda Bocchi is a folk-leaning singer-songwriter who fits the room. Combine it with a walk through the current exhibitions.
