Summer has officially arrived, and the city is leaning all the way into it. Tall ships are sailing up the James for SailFest, Brown's Island lights up with Friday Cheers, and the Flying Squirrels are home all week — which means if you're indoors after 6 PM this weekend, you're doing Richmond wrong. The single biggest thing on the calendar is SailFest at Dock Street Park, a genuinely impressive (and free) waterfront spectacle that culminates with fireworks over the river. Pair that with Cowboy Junkies at The National tonight and a packed slate of markets, gallery walks, and ballet, and you've got one of those weeks where the hardest part is choosing.

Richmond SailFest — Friday & Saturday, June 12–13, 11:00 AM–5:00 PM · Dock Street Park, Richmond

This is the marquee family event of the week, hands down. Tall ships at the dock, ship tours you can actually walk through, reenactors, live music, and fireworks over the James to close it out Saturday night. Kids lose their minds over the rigging tours — get there before noon if you want to board without a 45-minute line. Parking is rough near Wharf Street; park near 17th Street Market and walk the canal path down, it's prettier anyway.

Henrico Theatre – Family Movie Series — Saturday, June 13, 2:00 PM · Henrico Theatre, Highland Springs

Two dollars. That's the entire pitch. The Henrico Theatre is a beautifully restored 1938 art deco gem most West End families have never set foot in, and the family movie series is the best entry point. Bring younger kids (works best for ages 4–10) and grab a treat from the concession stand. It's air-conditioned, it's quick, and you'll be home before dinner.

Roots of Revolution: Shockoe Bottom Walking Tour — Saturday, June 14, 10:00 AM–11:30 AM · The First Freedom Center, Richmond

A 90-minute walking tour through Shockoe Bottom that doesn't flinch from the hard parts of Richmond's history — slavery, liberty, and the city's role in the Revolution all in one route. Best for kids 10 and up who can handle a real conversation. Wear actual walking shoes (the cobblestones are unforgiving) and bring water; June mornings already get muggy by 11.


An Evening with Cowboy Junkies – Celebrating 40 Years and Beyond — Thursday, June 11, 6:30 PM · The National, Richmond

The Cowboy Junkies at The National is basically a perfect date show — a band that built its reputation on hushed, intimate sets in a room small enough to feel them. Get there for the opener and grab a spot in the balcony if you want to actually talk to each other; the floor will be reverent and packed. Eat at Perly's or Saison beforehand, both within easy walking distance.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden – Flowers After 5 — Thursday, June 11, 5:00 PM–9:00 PM · Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Henrico

This is the easiest, prettiest date in town and Richmond couples know it — which means by 6:30 PM the wine line at the main pavilion is twenty deep. Get there at 5, grab drinks, then wander the rose garden and the conservatory while everyone else is queued up. The live music is usually a low-key acoustic act, perfect background. Members get in free; otherwise $17 well spent.

Richmond Ballet Studio Series – Summer Repertory — Thursday through Saturday, June 11–13, 7:00 PM · Richmond Ballet Studio Theatre, Richmond

The Studio Series is where the Ballet does its more adventurous, contemporary work in a 200-seat black box where you're close enough to hear the dancers breathe. If you've only ever seen ballet at the Carpenter, this is the version that converts skeptics. Dress is smart-casual, not formal. Plan a late dinner after at Brenner Pass or The Roosevelt — both five minutes away.

Agecroft Hall – Shakespeare Garden Tours — Monday, June 15, 6:00 PM · Agecroft Hall & Gardens, Richmond

A guided evening tour through the gardens of a real 15th-century English manor house that was disassembled, shipped from Lancashire, and reassembled on a bluff over the James. The Shakespeare garden in June is at peak — roses, herbs, foxglove — and the evening light coming through the oaks is genuinely stunning. Quiet, romantic, weird in the best way. Bring a layer; the river breeze comes up.

Friday Cheers – Emerging Artist Showcase — Friday, June 12, 6:00 PM · Brown's Island, Richmond

The cornerstone of Richmond summer, full stop. Ten bucks, riverfront, food trucks, beer, and a crowd that's overwhelmingly young professionals showing up solo or in small groups. Don't overthink it — get there by 6:15, claim a patch of grass near the stage but not on it, and you'll be in a conversation with strangers within an hour. Walk in from the Canal Walk to avoid the bottleneck at the Tredegar entrance.

Hardywood Richmond – Thursday Trivia — Thursday, June 11, 6:30 PM · Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Richmond

Solo trivia at Hardywood works because the crowd skews 25–35, the tables are communal-ish, and the host will absolutely let you join a team if you ask. The Gingerbread Stout is the move if it's pouring, otherwise the Singel. Order food from whichever truck is out front — there's always one. Arrive at 6 to grab a chair.

Gallery5 – Live Music & Art Night — Saturday, June 13, 8:00 PM · Gallery5, Richmond

Gallery5 is a former firehouse turned arts venue in Jackson Ward and the best place in town to walk in alone and immediately feel like you found the right room. The bill is eclectic — local bands, sometimes spoken word, always interesting visual art on the walls. Crowd skews artsy 20s-and-30s, drinks are cheap, and the conversations after the show often spill out onto the sidewalk. Cash for the door is easiest.

Thrice with I Am The Avalanche — Sunday, June 14, 7:00 PM · The National, Richmond

If you grew up on early-2000s post-hardcore, this show is your church. Thrice still brings it live and I Am The Avalanche is a properly strong opener. The pit will be enthusiastic but mostly mid-30s nostalgic, not chaotic. Floor for energy, balcony if you want to actually hear the harmonies.


SailFest – Celebrate the Harbor at Rocketts Landing — Friday, June 12, 5:00 PM–9:00 PM · Rocketts Landing Marina, Richmond

The Friday-night version of SailFest, focused on Rocketts Landing — boats, music, food and drink along the water. Smaller and more bar-crawl-friendly than the Dock Street Park festival the next day. Get a group together, start at Boathouse for an early drink on the deck, then walk down to the festival. Rideshare in; the lot fills early.

Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen – Still Gettin' Away With It Tour — Friday, June 12, 7:00 PM · The National, Richmond

Grammy winner, Yellowstone soundtrack guy, and one of the best Americana live acts working — Ryan Bingham at The National is the kind of show you bring four friends to and everybody texts you afterward to say thanks. Pre-game at Strangeways or The Hofheimer rooftop. Floor general admission; arrive by 7 for a decent spot at the rail.

Richmond Night Market — Saturday, June 13, 5:00 PM–9:00 PM · 17th Street Market, Richmond

Shockoe Bottom's evening market is the best low-effort group plan of the week — local artisans, food vendors, live music, and the perfect launchpad for a night out in the Bottom. Wander for an hour, then walk over to The Tobacco Company or grab cocktails at Saison. Bring cash; some vendors are card-only but the lines are shorter at the cash ones.

Richmond Flying Squirrels vs. Harrisburg Senators — Thursday through Tuesday, June 11–16, 6:35 PM · CarMax Park, Richmond

Six straight home games at the brand-new CarMax Park. Minor league baseball is built for groups — cheap tickets, easy snacks, and you can talk through the whole game without missing anything important. Friday night has fireworks. Get the lawn seats if it's a big group, or splurge on the third-base club for the AC.

RVA Big Market (South of the James Farmers Market) — Sunday, June 14, 9:00 AM–1:00 PM · Bryan Park, Richmond

The Big Market at Bryan Park is one of the best dog-friendly Sunday mornings in the city. Wide shaded paths, well-behaved dogs everywhere, and a vendor list that runs deep — produce, prepared food, baked goods, soaps, the works. Get there by 9:30 if you want the good kolaches before they sell out. Bring a water bowl; the heat builds fast.

Carytown Farmers Market — Sunday, June 14, 9:00 AM–1:00 PM · City Stadium, Richmond

Smaller, more neighborhood-feel than the Big Market, and easier parking. The new City Stadium location has more shade than the old spot and the food vendors are excellent — coffee, breakfast tacos, fresh pastries. Dogs welcome. Pair it with a walk through Byrd Park afterward.

First Fridays Art Walk – June — Friday, June 12, 5:00 PM–9:00 PM · Richmond Arts District, Richmond

First Fridays is genuinely all-ages — galleries open late, the sidewalks fill up, restaurants spill out onto Broad Street. Start at Quirk Hotel's gallery, work your way east. Bring kids if you want; bring dogs if they're chill with crowds. The food trucks cluster around 1708 Gallery and the energy peaks around 7:30.

Richmond African American History Tour — Friday & Saturday, June 12–13, 2:00 PM · Mama J's Kitchen (start point), Richmond

A one-hour walking tour through Jackson Ward — the historic "Harlem of the South" — exploring Black businesses, churches, and cultural landmarks. Starting at Mama J's is the smartest move in the city: do the tour, then sit down for the best fried chicken in Richmond. Fifteen dollars, well spent, and Saturday's slot is the easier reservation.

BrewHaHa at the Botanical Garden — Saturday, June 27 · A 21+ craft beer tasting in the gardens with live music and food trucks. Tickets sell out every year; book this week.

Henrico County – Red, White, and Lights — Monday, June 29 · Pre-Fourth fireworks at Meadow Farm with live music and family activities. Free, no ticket needed, but parking fills by 6 PM.

Stone Brewing Richmond at the Fall Line — 4300 Williamsburg Avenue, Fulton

If you haven't been to Stone since the dust settled on the ownership changes, this is the week to fix that. The riverfront patio behind the brewery — overlooking the rapids where the James drops out of the fall line — is one of the most underrated outdoor seats in the city, and June is when it earns its keep. Go on a weekday evening around 6, after the lunch rush and before the weekend crowds. Order the Stone IPA if you're a purist, or whichever small-batch pilot beer they've put on tap that week (ask the bartender, they'll have opinions). The wood-fired pizza is the move on the food menu — skip the burger. Bring your dog; the patio is fully dog-friendly and there's a water station near the back gate. Park in the gravel lot off Williamsburg Ave, not the main entrance, and you'll walk in past the river view, which is the right way to arrive.
