This Week in NoVa

Thursday, June 11, 2026

Summer is officially showing off. This week the lineup leans heavily outdoor — free Friday concerts in Reston and Herndon, a Saturday stacked with festivals from Arlington blues to a pollinator party in Leesburg, and the Workhouse Arts Center essentially throwing itself a weekend-long open house in Lorton. If you only do one thing, make it Saturday afternoon at Workhouse: there's a block party, open studios, and SpongeBob the Musical all on the same campus. It's the most fun you'll have for free in Fairfax all month.

This Week

For Families

Artists' studios glow inside a former prison

Pollinator Festival at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve — Saturday, June 13, 10:00 AM–2:00 PM · Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Leesburg

Banshee Reeks is one of those Loudoun gems most people drive past on the way to wineries, and this is the perfect excuse to finally pull in. Expect live pollinators under magnifying glasses, native-plant giveaways, naturalist-led walks, and the kind of low-key county-run programming that's genuinely well done. Best for kids roughly 4-10 who can handle a little walking on grass and gravel. Wear closed-toe shoes — the preserve is working meadow, not manicured park — and bring water because shade is hit or miss.

Kids Fishing Derby — Saturday, June 13, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM · Reston Association, Reston

This is a Reston Association classic, and the early start is non-negotiable — the fish bite before 9:30 and then everyone's just standing around in the sun. Bring your own rod if you have one, but loaner gear is usually around for first-timers. Great for ages 4-12, and the parking fills fast at the pond, so plan to walk in from a side street. Pair it with breakfast at Lake Anne afterward and you've got a perfect Saturday morning.

Summer Launch Party! — Saturday, June 13, 10:00 AM · The nZone, Chantilly

If the forecast turns ugly, this is your rain plan. The nZone is a massive indoor sports complex in Chantilly that throws a free summer kickoff with moon bounces, snacks, and run-around space — exactly what you need when the kids have hit the wall. Best for the under-10 crowd. Free is free, but it gets loud and crowded by 11, so go right at open.

Little Farmers Education – Bunnies & Care — Friday, June 12, 10:00 AM · Great Country Farms, Bluemont

A short, hands-on class for the preschool set built into a full day at Great Country Farms — which honestly is the move out in Bluemont this time of year. The class is $5 on top of farm admission (free for members), and you get bunnies, a story, and a craft. Pack a picnic, plan to stay through lunch, and let the kids run the pedal carts after. It's a 50-minute drive from Ashburn but it pays off.

Date Night

Ravel Dance Company Presents Cinderella — Saturday, June 13, 4:00 PM · Capital One Hall, Tysons

Capital One Hall has quietly become the prettiest place to see a performance in NoVa, and a 4 PM ballet means you're out by 6 with the whole evening still ahead. Make a reservation at Wren or Patsy's upstairs in the same building and you don't even have to move your car. The garage is free on weekends — use the Capital One Way entrance, not the Westpark side, unless you enjoy walking.

The Bridge with Elizabeth's Furnace - Tribute to Led Zeppelin — Thursday, June 11, 6:00 PM · Tarara Summer Concert Series, Leesburg

Tarara's lakeside concert lawn is the kind of place that makes out-of-town friends say "wait, this is in Virginia?" Bring a low chair (no high-backs allowed), pack a charcuterie spread, and grab a bottle of the Charval — their dry white blend that holds up to a warm evening better than the reds. Gates open early; the smart move is to be parked and set up by 5:30 to claim a good lawn spot near the water.

Second Saturday — Saturday, June 13, 6:00 PM–9:00 PM · Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton

The monthly open-studios night at Workhouse is genuinely one of the best free date nights in the region — wander through working artists' studios, talk to the painters and ceramicists, grab a beer and a food truck taco, and actually walk out with something you bought directly from the maker. The campus (a former prison, fascinating in itself) is lit up nicely after dark. Park in the main lot off Ox Road and start at Building W-16.

SOLU Worship Concert — Saturday, June 13, 7:00 PM–9:00 PM · Reston Bible Church, Dulles

A free evening worship concert with visiting musicians — seating is limited, so get there 20-30 minutes early if it matters to you. Lovely option for couples looking for something quieter and more contemplative on a Saturday night.

For Singles & Young Professionals

Reston Concerts on the Town: Herr Metal — Saturday, June 13, 7:30 PM–10:00 PM · Reston Town Center Pavilion, Reston

This is the easiest night out in Reston all summer. Free outdoor rock show at the Pavilion, with the entire Town Center radiating around it — meaning you can grab a drink at Big Buns or Matchbox, drift over to the show, and end up at Founding Farmers or Red's Table without ever moving your car. Going solo is totally normal here; the crowd is a mix of dating couples, work friends, and Reston regulars. Show up around 7:15 with a beer in hand.

Disney vs Pixar Trivia — Tuesday, June 16, 6:30 PM · Lark Brewing Co., Aldie

Lark Brewing in Aldie has become a real scene for trivia nights, and a Disney vs. Pixar theme is going to bring out teams that take this very seriously. Show up with at least two friends or be willing to join a team — the staff is good at folding solos in. Get there by 6:00 to grab a table and order a flight; the patio is the move if the weather holds.

Cars & Coffee in Herndon — Saturday, June 13, 8:00 AM · Northwest Federal Credit Union Headquarters, Herndon

You don't need to own a Porsche or know anything about cars — half the crowd is just there for coffee and the spectacle. It's an informal weekly gathering at the NWFCU headquarters where everything from vintage Mustangs to modern exotics rolls in. Get there by 8:30 for peak turnout; by 10:30 the lot's clearing out.

Groups & Friends

Columbia Pike Blues Festival — Saturday, June 13 · Penrose Square, Arlington

Arlington's biggest street festival of the summer, and worth the drive in from Loudoun if you have a crew willing to make a day of it. Take Metro to Pentagon City and grab a Lyft or a long walk over — driving and parking around Penrose Square on festival day is a special kind of misery. The blues lineup is legitimately good, the food vendors hold up, and Penrose itself has bars all around the square if you need to peel off.

Workhouse Block Party — Saturday, June 13, 3:00 PM–6:00 PM · Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton

Pair this with Second Saturday later that evening and you've got a perfect Lorton afternoon-into-night plan. The block party takes over the campus with live music, food, drinks, and art demos. Bring a group of 4-6 and you can split up to wander, then regroup for dinner from the trucks. Free, dog-friendly, and easy to layer into the evening.

Taste of Springfield — Saturday, June 13 · Springfield

The classic restaurant sampler format — tickets get you bites from a rotation of local Springfield spots. Best done with at least three people so you can divide and conquer the line situation. Wear comfortable shoes and eat light beforehand; the pacing is faster than you think.

Movies And Events Under The Stars: Back To The Future — Sunday, June 14, 6:30 PM · Central Station Drive, Ashburn

Outdoor movie nights in Ashburn have a loyal following, and Back to the Future is the kind of crowd-pleaser that gets people quoting along. Bring low chairs or a blanket, get there by 6:00 to stake a spot, and walk over to one of the Central Station restaurants after for a drink. Easy, free, and pleasantly nostalgic.

All Ages & Pets

Reston Farmers Market — Saturday, June 13, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM · Lake Anne Plaza, Reston

Lake Anne on a Saturday morning is the platonic ideal of a Reston weekend — leashed dogs everywhere, kids in strollers, coffee from Lake Anne Coffee House in hand, and one of the best produce markets in the region. Go early (8:15ish) for the good tomatoes and bread before they sell out. Park in the lot off North Shore Drive — the Plaza is a short walk and you'll avoid the circus.

Leesburg Wednesday Farmers Market — Wednesday, June 11, 4:00 PM–7:00 PM · Virginia Village Shopping Center, Leesburg

A perfect after-work market for picking up something to throw on the grill that night. Smaller and easier to navigate than the Saturday market downtown, with reliable produce stands and a couple of solid prepared-food vendors. Dogs welcome, and you'll be in and out in 30 minutes.

AVFRD Community Appreciation Pancake Breakfast — Sunday, June 14, 8:00 AM · Ashburn Volunteer Plaza, Ashburn

Pancakes by Ashburn's volunteer firefighters is exactly the kind of small-town Loudoun moment that explains why people move here. It's free, the kids get to climb on the truck, and you can chat with your neighbors. Go early — by 9:30 the line is real.

HSLC Adoption Event — Sunday, June 14, 12:00 PM · PetSmart, Leesburg

Humane Society of Loudoun County brings adoptable dogs and cats to the Leesburg PetSmart. Even if you're not ready to adopt, it's a sweet way to spend 30 minutes — and the dogs always appreciate the attention.

Standing Pick

Lake Anne Plaza, Reston. Forget the gleaming Town Center for a minute — the original Reston is the one tucked around a small lake off North Shore Drive, with brick walkways, a fountain plaza, and a working dock. This is where Robert Simon's planned-community vision actually came to life in the 1960s, and it still has the feel of a real European piazza dropped into Fairfax County. Saturday is the obvious move with the farmers market, but the hidden play is a weekday afternoon: get a coffee at Lake Anne Coffee House, an outstanding banh mi from Kalypso's Sports Tavern's lunch counter (or full meal on their waterside patio), and walk the loop around the lake. The Used Book Shop is a labyrinth worth getting lost in, and you can rent a kayak or paddleboard from the boathouse if it's warm. Park free in the North Shore Drive lot — the Village Center lot fills up fast on weekends. It's the most distinctly Reston thing you can do, and most people who live here still haven't really explored it.

Before You Go

- Weather — Mid-June in NoVa means humid 80s by afternoon; the outdoor concerts and Saturday festivals are best handled with water, bug spray, and a hat for early starts.

- Pro tip — If you're hitting Workhouse for the Block Party, Second Saturday, AND SpongeBob, buy the show ticket online in advance and treat the rest as drop-in — parking is one-and-done.

- Local resource — Loudoun Farmers Markets (loudounfarmersmarkets.org) has the full weekly schedule for every market in the county, including the rain-or-shine policies.
