The Elder Saison and the Free Verse IPA are what to order; skip whatever fruited sour they're pushing unless that's genuinely your thing. Bring a lawn chair if you want to actually sit — the picnic tables fill by 6. Dogs welcome, and it's an easy Uber back downtown if you don't want to drive.

It's aimed at the student and young-adult crowd, so if you're home from college and looking for a plan that isn't another brewery, this is it. Wear athletic shoes (they'll turn you away in sandals), and know that the first Tarzan swing is where everyone freezes — commit to the jump and the rest of the course is fun instead of terrifying. Book ahead; walk-ups often can't get slots.

The original 1607 settlement site — not the reconstructed museum next door, but the actual archaeological dig where they're still pulling artifacts out of the ground on the site of James Fort. Go on a weekday morning if you can, before the tour buses arrive around 10:30. The ranger-led fort tours are the entire reason to come — the archaeologists working the site will sometimes stop and answer questions, and it's the closest you'll get to touching early America without a shovel. Budget two hours minimum, three if you also want to walk the Island Loop Drive (a genuinely beautiful low-traffic scenic route along the James). Bring water and bug spray — the marshes are no joke in July. The Archaearium museum has some of the recovered artifacts and a working forensic lab you can peer into. Combined ticket with Yorktown Battlefield is the smart buy if you're doing both this summer.

- Weather — Mid-July in the Triangle means high 80s to low 90s with real humidity; plan outdoor plans for before 10 or after 5, and check radar Saturday afternoon — pop-up thunderstorms are the norm.
- Parking tip — For Merchants Square on Saturday, skip the surface lots on Duke of Gloucester and use the Prince George Parking Garage; it's rarely full before 10 and you're a two-minute walk from the market.
