This Week in Hampton Roads

Thursday, June 11, 2026

This is the calm before the storm week — and I mean that as a compliment. Next weekend the entire Norfolk waterfront detonates with Sail250 and Harborfest simultaneously, so use these next seven days to do the smaller, weirder, more personal things: glassblowing after dark at the Chrysler, a tropical dance party in Ghent, Pride Night at the zoo, and the kind of free Friday block party in Downtown Hampton that reminds you why people put up with summer humidity around here. It's also Father's Day weekend, so the Norfolk Botanical Garden is leaning all the way into it. Pace yourself — Harborfest is coming.

This Week

For Families

Molten glass becomes a keepsake

Fairy & Gnome Summer Homes — Thursday, June 11, 10:00–11:00 AM · Norfolk Botanical Garden, Norfolk

This is the kind of program that sounds twee until you watch a four-year-old spend forty-five minutes intensely engineering a moss roof for a gnome. Kids build miniature summer homes from natural materials, and garden admission is included with the $14–$22 ticket, which makes it a steal — you can easily turn it into a half-day with a tram ride and a picnic afterward. Park near the Baker Hall entrance; it's the closest to the children's garden area. Best for ages 4–9.

Jr Garden Artists: Father's Day Plates & Mugs — Saturday, June 13, 10:00 AM · Norfolk Botanical Garden, Norfolk

If you've been winging Father's Day gifts for years, outsource it to the Botanical Garden this Saturday. Kids paint a plate-and-mug set Dad can actually use on Sunday morning, which is a meaningfully better gift than another tie. The session is just an hour, so plan to stick around and wander the rose garden — it's peak bloom right now. Bring a snack; the kids will be hungry the second the brushes go down.

Hands on Clay: National Clay Week — Clay Dinos — Monday, June 15, 2:00–3:00 PM · Slover Library, Norfolk

The Slover is one of the most underused free resources in Norfolk, and this week they're running a clay program for preschoolers through teens. Monday is dinosaurs; Wednesday wraps with coil bowls (see below). It's free, it's downtown, and the library parking garage right there is validated — much easier than circling Plume Street. Show up ten minutes early because spots fill in the order kids walk through the door.

Pride Night at the Virginia Zoo — Saturday, June 13, 5:00–8:30 PM · Virginia Zoo, Norfolk

The zoo after hours is a completely different experience — the animals are more active in the cooler evening, and the crowds thin out. Add a DJ, a Pride-themed market, and community resource tables, and you've got a low-key, joyful family night. Strollers welcome; wear closed-toe shoes because the trails get dusty by late afternoon. Members get the best pricing, but day tickets are reasonable.

Date Night

Open Studio: Glassblowing at Perry Glass Studio — Thursday, June 11, 6:00–9:00 PM · Chrysler Museum Glass Studio, Norfolk

Yes, $100–$125 is real money, but you walk out having actually made a piece of glass, and there are very few date nights in Hampton Roads that hand you a tangible souvenir and a story. This is the intermediate session, so it helps if one of you has done a demo before — otherwise check their beginner offerings. Wear closed-toe shoes and natural fibers (the furnace is no joke). After, walk across Olney Road to Cure Coffeehouse or grab a glass of wine at Field Guide.

Classical Trio – Da Costa, Mesa & Kern — Thursday, June 11, 7:30–9:30 PM · Robin Hixon Theater, Norfolk

Chamber music in a small room is one of the most underrated date nights anywhere, and the Hixon is genuinely intimate — you can see the bow hairs move. This is the final night of a three-night run, so it'll have the polish of a settled-in performance. Dress one notch up from casual and plan dinner before, not after; everything nearby closes earlier than you think on a Thursday.

Spirit Filled Supper Club — Wednesday, June 17, 6:00–8:00 PM · Metaphysical Chapel of Life, Norfolk

This one's a curveball — a monthly community dinner at a metaphysical chapel with fellowship and spiritual messages woven in. It's not for everyone, but if you and your partner are the kind of couple who likes to try something genuinely different on a Wednesday, this is a memorable one. Come open-minded, leave full. Check the link for current pricing.

For Singles & Young Professionals

Tropical Tease Dance Party with DJ Paul — Saturday, June 13, 9:30–11:30 PM · 37th and Zen, Norfolk

37th and Zen has quietly become one of the most consistent late-night spots in Ghent for a crowd that wants to actually dance, not stand around shouting over a sound system. Tropical theme, DJ Paul behind the decks, and The Feral Showgirls performing — it's 21+, $5–$8 at the door, and the energy peaks around 10:30. Going solo is completely normal here; the crowd is friendly and the floor fills up fast. Park on Colley and walk.

Shaping Place – Downtown Norfolk Council Annual Meeting — Thursday, June 11, 5:00 PM · The Neon House, Norfolk

If you work in or near downtown Norfolk and you've been meaning to actually meet the people shaping the next five years of the city, this is the room. The Neon House itself is a fun venue (you've seen the murals on the side), and the crowd is a real mix of civic types, developers, and small business owners. Bring cards, dress smart-casual, and don't skip the post-meeting mingling — that's where the actual networking happens.

World Soccer Series at Waterside District — Thursday, June 11, 7:00 PM · Waterside District, Norfolk

Free, on the water, big screens, and food and drink within ten paces — this is the easiest way to meet people who like sports without committing to anything. Show up around 6:45, grab something from Stripers or Guy Fieri's, and post up. It skews young-professional but not exclusively. Solo arrivals are normal because half the people are walking over from work.

Groups & Friends

Downtown Hampton Block Party – Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos — Saturday, June 13, 5:00–10:00 PM · Kings Way & Queens Way, Hampton

The Downtown Hampton block parties are reliably one of the best free Saturday nights on the Peninsula, and Rosano's blues-rock is built for an outdoor stage. Bring the whole crew, eat at one of the Queens Way restaurants beforehand (Marker 20 has the best patio), then drift over when the band starts. Parking's easier than you'd guess — the garage on Settlers Landing is right there. Crowd skews mixed-age and friendly.

Summer Fest at Town Center – June Session — Friday, June 12 through Wednesday, June 17 · Town Center, Virginia Beach

This isn't one event so much as an ongoing fabric — music pop-ups, activities, and entertainment threading through Town Center all week from local businesses. It's the easiest "let's just go see what's happening" plan for a group of friends. Park in the Pembroke Avenue garage (free for the first three hours) and walk to Fountain Plaza first to see what's set up.

Worldwide Knit in Public Day with 757 Creative Reuse Center — Saturday, June 13, 11:00 AM–2:00 PM · Huber Court, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk

Bring the friend group, even the one who doesn't knit. Huber Court is the bright glass-roofed atrium at the center of the Chrysler, donated yarn and notions are provided, and the whole thing has a "wholesome chaos" energy that's surprisingly fun. Free, drop-in, and you can pair it with a wander through the galleries — admission is free. Coffee from Cure after.

All Ages & Pets

Norfolk Botanical Garden Bike Nights — Thursday, June 11, 4:00–7:00 PM · Norfolk Botanical Garden, Norfolk

Riding the paved garden loops in the golden hour with no car traffic and a breeze coming off Lake Whitehurst is genuinely one of the most pleasant ways to spend a Thursday evening in this city. Bring your own bike, take it easy, and yes — leashed dogs are welcome. The loop is about three miles if you do the whole perimeter. Pack water; the concession stand keeps unpredictable hours.

YNOT Wednesdays: Buck Shot at Sandler Center Plaza — Wednesday, June 17, 5:00–9:00 PM · Sandler Center Outdoor Plaza, Virginia Beach

YNOT Wednesdays is the most reliable free weeknight concert series on the Southside — country band Buck Shot this week, food vendors and beverages on site, and a crowd that ranges from toddlers in headphones to retirees with lawn chairs. Dogs welcome on leash. Bring a blanket, arrive by 5:30 to claim grass real estate near the stage, and park in the Pembroke garage.

Standing Pick

The Noland Trail at the Mariners' Museum Park — 100 Museum Drive, Newport News. This is the trail I send people to when they tell me they're tired of the Boardwalk and want something that feels actually wooded. It's a 5-mile loop around Lake Maury inside the 550-acre Mariners' Museum Park, with fourteen wooden bridges, real shade, and the kind of soft pine-needle footing that's gentle on knees. June is perfect: leafed out enough to keep the heat off, before the August humidity becomes oppressive. Park at the museum lot (free), and start counterclockwise so the steepest section comes early when your legs are fresh. Bring water — there are no concessions on the loop — and a leash for the dog; they're welcome and you'll see plenty. If you've got an extra hour after, the Mariners' Museum itself is one of the most underrated museums in the country and admission is $1. Best time to go: a weekday morning before 10, or any evening after 6 when the light through the loblolly pines goes golden. marinersmuseum.org

Before You Go

- Weekend weather — Mid-Atlantic June means upper 80s with a real chance of a Friday afternoon thunderstorm; the Hampton block party usually plays through light rain, but check radar around 4 PM.

- Pro tip — If you're going to anything in downtown Norfolk this Thursday, the Main Street garage is half the price of the Waterside lot and a four-minute walk.

- Local resource — Hampton Roads Transit's ferry between Norfolk and Portsmouth is $2 and runs into the evening — a cheap, breezy way to extend any downtown night.
