This is the 35th year of Roanoke's signature celebration of Black heritage and culture, and it remains one of the best festivals of the year — nine hours of music that runs from gospel in the afternoon to headline R&B and soul after dark, with food vendors lining the park and a crowd that genuinely represents the whole city. Get there by mid-afternoon if you want to hear the earlier sets without a wall of people between you and the stage; the headliner crush is real by 7. Bring cash for the food vendors — some of the best plates only take it — and park in the Market Garage or Center in the Square deck and walk in. It's a paid festival but affordable, and worth every dollar.

Bring the dog to the Taubman. Outdoor art activities, vendors, and a plaza full of very good boys and girls sniffing each other in front of the Frank Gehry-adjacent architecture. It's a warm, weird, delightful thing — the sort of event that only makes sense once you've been. Bring water and a short leash; the plaza gets crowded.

Roots-rock and Americana in the Spot's listening room — the kind of $12–$15 Friday night that reminds you why smaller cities can have better music scenes than bigger ones. Jack The Radio is a Raleigh band with a big-hearted sound; Jack Marion opens. Get a table.

Yes, they'll play "Blister in the Sun." Yes, you'll sing every word. The Femmes at Elmwood is one of those shows that reads as a nostalgia play on paper and hits like a live-wire punk set in person — Gordon Gano's voice still cracks in all the right places, and the acoustic bass on "Kiss Off" is louder in that amphitheater than you'd believe. Tuesday night crowds at Elmwood tend to be a little older and a lot more chill than the weekend shows, which is a gift. Grab a beer at one of the Market bars first — Blue 5 or Alejandro's — and walk over.

If you only go to one small-room show this week, make it this one. Scales is a steelpan virtuoso who plays what is essentially prog-jazz with the world's most joyful instrument, and the Fourchestra is a genuinely stunning trio. The Spot on Kirk is a listening room — 100-ish seats, tight acoustics, everyone quiet when the music's on — and it's exactly the right venue for this band. $20–$25 is a steal. Show up 20 minutes early for the good seats and grab a drink before doors.

Traditional folk musicians and dancers from Rajasthan in Shaftman Hall — this is the kind of program Jefferson Center does better than anyone in the region, and it's the sort of show you'll be genuinely glad you saw. The hall itself is beautiful, the acoustics are gorgeous, and the storytelling element makes it work even if you've never heard a note of Indian folk music. Great pick for a curious date night or a low-key evening with parents in town.

311 closing out the Bud Summer Series on a Friday night in September — this is going to be a packed lawn, and it's going to be a good one. The band has been touring nonstop for three decades and they still bring the energy; the reggae-rock catalog is basically built for an outdoor amphitheater in early fall. Get there early enough to actually get near the front, because the entire lawn fills fast on a Friday and the sound dips noticeably past the sound board. Rideshare or park at Elmwood Garage — the surface lots downtown will be gone by 5:30.

The JC Social Club is Jefferson Center's swing-and-line-dance-with-a-DJ-and-a-bar concept, and it's genuinely fun — beginner-friendly lessons up front, then the floor opens up. No partner required. Perfect if you want to try something new without going to an actual club. Show up at 6 for the lessons or you'll be behind.

The Steve Harvey Morning Show co-host and prank-call legend is taping his final live special right here in Roanoke — that's why this ticket is hot and why the room is going to be full-throat loud. Nephew Tommy's material lives in that big-church, big-family observational zone; the crowd energy is half the show. Because it's a taping, plan for a longer runtime than a standard set (they'll do pickups) and don't be the person on their phone. Park in the Berglund lot; get there by 6:30.

The harvest moon over the Blue Ridge from Explore Park is the kind of thing you build a date around. Guided evening hike, easy enough to talk your way through, ending under a full moon on the parkway. Bring a light layer — the temperature drops fast after sundown in late September — and a headlamp for the walk back to the car. Pair it with a stop at Twin Creeks Brewing on your way home if you want to make a whole night of it.

Cyclocross is the most spectator-friendly bike racing that exists — riders do laps around a short course, dismount to hop over barriers, and the crowd stands three feet from the action ringing cowbells. Go Cross is a UCI-level race, meaning the field is legit, and Fallon Park's course is fast and viewer-friendly. Free to watch. Bring a folding chair, a coffee, and if you're feeling brave, wear a costume — cyclocross fans are that kind of crowd.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's community walk — meaningful, well-organized, and the sort of morning that leaves you glad you showed up. Register in advance if you can; day-of is possible but the line moves slowly.

343 flights, honoring the 343 firefighters lost on 9/11. It's a serious physical undertaking (there's a scaled version) and a deeply moving one. Wear something breathable and bring water; the stairwell gets warm quickly.

Two hours of actual skill-building for teens at Camp Roanoke — the sort of thing that reads well on a college app and is genuinely useful. Small-group format, so register ahead.
