The Muscarelle is opening its full galleries free this afternoon anchored around the special exhibition Forever Marked by the Day, with reflective programming and hands-on memorial activities. It's the rare civic-moment event that isn't performative — walk the exhibition, sit with it, then wander the William & Mary campus at golden hour. Great pick for parents with tweens and teens; also works as a low-pressure date night. The Hubbard Lane theater is small, so book ahead for the closing weekend.

The fall sidewalk sale is when Merchants Square shops actually put the good stuff out at real markdowns — Scotland House, R. Bryant, the Peanut Shop, and the boutiques along Duke of Gloucester all participate. Go Friday morning if you want first pick, Sunday afternoon if you want the deepest cuts. Combine with brunch at the Fat Canary or a Wythe Candy stop.

Howl-O-Scream is back and opening weekend is genuinely the best time to go — the scare actors are fresh, the lines haven't calibrated yet, and the new house rollouts are still surprising. It's an adult-skewing night event (not the daytime Bier Fest crowd), and Fridays are lighter than Saturdays. Buy the fright-lane pass if you're doing more than three houses; you'll thank yourself.

Go hungry, wear shoes you don't mind getting shell dust on, and get there early in the afternoon before the raw bar line stretches down to Water Street. Parking on Main Street fills fast; the lot behind the Yorktown Freight Shed is your friend.

Living-history programming that covers what Yorktown actually looked like before the shooting started — the town, the trade, the people who lived there before Washington and Rochambeau arrived. It's free, it's outside, and it pairs perfectly with the Oyster Roast on Saturday. Start at the Main Street interpretive stops, then walk out to the battlefield redoubts in the afternoon when the light is best.

Two full days of DockDogs diving competitions (yes, the big-air pool for dogs), vendors, and — critically for the humans — a wine and beer garden on the Visitor Center grounds. Even if you don't own a dog, DockDogs is genuinely fun to watch; the big-air heats are the ones to catch. Free to spectate. Park at the Visitor Center and walk in; do not try to street-park in the Historic Area this weekend.

The library's ComicCon is a genuine highlight for teens and middle-schoolers — cosplay, tabletop games, anime programming, artist tables, and the fact that it's completely free makes it the best-value plan of the week. Costumes encouraged. The parking lot at the Scotland Street library is small; come from the Kingswood side and you'll find spots faster.

Peak market season — tomatoes still going, apples arriving, the flower stands looking absurd. Get there by 9:00 AM if you actually want the good bread from the bakery tent. This is the Saturday morning ritual for a reason.

Longtime community fundraiser — big vats of shrimp, sides, live music, and a crowd that has been coming for years. It's the exact opposite of a curated food event, and that's the appeal. Cash is faster than card at the door.

Three hours of beach cleanup on Gloucester Point that doubles as citizen-science data collection. Counts for service hours for high schoolers, and it's a legitimately good way to spend a Saturday morning with a group. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water.

Bring a towel for the ride home, and know that small-dog and large-dog swim slots are usually staggered.

Williamsburg's monthly street festival is at its best in September — the weather finally breaks, the artisans come out, and there's live music at both ends of the block. Dogs welcome, strollers welcome, and Aromas is right there when you need a coffee. Park at the Prince George garage and walk over — the North Boundary side streets get tight fast.

An intimate chamber concert inside the Art Museums building — small room, serious musicians, a program built around the stories behind the pieces. This is the best date-night ticket of the week if you want something that isn't a brewery. Get there 20 minutes early to walk the galleries first; the ticket usually gets you in.

The Folk Festival is the reason a lot of people keep the third weekend of September clear — American roots music on multiple stages along Main Street, with the York River as the backdrop and food vendors that actually reflect the area. Bring a blanket, plan to stay past sunset when the mainstage really gets going, and consider the trolley from the Riverwalk parking areas instead of fighting for a spot on Main.

The PIPE fundraiser has been going for nearly two decades and it consistently draws a bigger, livelier crowd than you'd expect — this year it's a Buffett-tribute night, which is exactly the singalong energy the new Sports & Events Center is built for. Come dressed for it (yes, Hawaiian shirts, yes, unironically) and buy tickets ahead — walk-up has gotten harder each year.

Free museum access plus hands-on art-making stations across the galleries. Bring kids, bring teens, bring the friend who "doesn't do museums" — this is the format that gets them in the door. Parking is easiest in the Kaplan Arena lot on a Saturday.
